and then we saw mitch mcconnell coming up saying, yes, mr. president, you have been bashing us for weeks, let's vote on those tax rates. mitch mcconnell said let's do that and we'll leave the sequester aside. we'll let it kick into place. we'll tackle that whenever we get back here to washington after the inauguration and the state of the union and all that fun stuff. so that's where we stand right now. that does remain the last sticking point. >> luke, jump in here. what do you have to add that mike has already told us. >> well, mike viqueira is 12, 13 years of experience on capitol hill, so there's not much more to add after that. what i will say is i don't think that we can dismiss a lot of the anger on the republican side at the president's remarks today. i have gotten a ton of e-mails from republican aides saying the president is holding the middle class tax cuts that were agreed to hostage. i think if you take a step back, it's quite extraordinary that mitch mcconnell has agreed to $400,000 as a threshold. you think of all the partisan

there is the republican leader mitch mcconnell talking about a deal. he said they're very close. >> we are very, very close. as the president just said, the most important piece, the piece that has to be done now, is preventing the tax hikes. president said, quote, for now our most immediate priority is to stop taxes going up from middle class families starting tomorrow, end quote. i agree. he suggested that action on the sequester is something we continue to work on in the coming months. so i agree. let's pass the tax relief portion now. let's take what's been agreed to and get moving. let me say this was not easy to get to. i mean, the vice president and i last spoke about yesterday about 12:45 this morning and then again at 6:30 this morning and multiple times here in the day this morning, this has been clearly a good faith negotiation. we all want to protect taxpayers and we can get it done now. right now. so let me be clear. we'll continue to work on finding smarter ways to cut spending, but let's not let that hold up protecting americans from the

the vp and senate minority leader mitch mcconnell exchanged phone calls until midnight last night and again this morning, and appeared to be zeroing in on a tax rate compromise in the region of a $450,000 to $550,000 threshold. a higher rate than the president's earlier compromise as well as an agreement on the estate tax. sticking points remain. president obama seemed resigned to going over the cliff. >> if all else fails, if republicans do, in fact, decide to block it so that taxes on middle class families do, in fact, go up on january 1st, then on january 4th the first bill to be introduced on the floor will be to cut taxes on middle class families. >> and this morning former white house spokesman robert gibbs was even more blunt. >> the republicans simply can't utter the word yes. they cannot utter the word yes. i mean, i feel like it's -- i feel like you're talking to a 5-year-old, and, you know, you're saying, look, you have to eat your vegetables. the 5-year-old says, ah, you know, maybe. i will eat half of them, and you say will you eat a quarter of them? i will eat a quarter
